🌆 Postcards from the City | Connecting Culture Mile Businesses
Culture Mile BID was delighted to welcome children from local schools participating in the Postcards from the City project, delivered in partnership with the Voces8 Foundation.
This inspiring initiative forms part of the Foundation’s Writing with Purpose programme, designed to bring creativity and real world context into the classroom. Through the simple but powerful act of writing postcards, children were given the opportunity to develop their literacy skills while connecting with the world of work and the vibrant businesses that make up Culture Mile.
✍ Writing with Purpose
At the heart of the project was a meaningful exchange between Primary school students and local employers. Businesses across Culture Mile volunteered their time to write postcards to participating children, using specially selected postcards featuring scenes from the Culture Mile area.
The aim was to give pupils a tangible audience for their writing, helping them understand that communication has purpose beyond the classroom. By receiving postcards from professionals working in a variety of sectors, students were able to see how writing plays a role in everyday working life, from architecture and heritage to finance and law.
🤝 Participating organisations included:
- Bank of America
- Fragomen
- English Heritage
- Phillips 66
- DLA Piper
- PRP Architects
- RW Baird
Their involvement demonstrates the strength of Culture Mile’s business community and its commitment to supporting local education and young people.
🎶 Music, Creativity and Celebration
The project culminated in a special visit to the Voces8 Centre, where the children took part in a celebratory performance led by the Voces8 Scholars. The atmosphere was full of energy and pride as pupils performed a selection of songs, including Who Will Buy? from Oliver! and the ever-appropriate Please Mr Postman. The performances showcased not only musical talent but also the confidence and creativity nurtured through the wider programme.
📈 Strengthening Connections Across Culture Mile
Postcards from the City highlights the power of collaboration between education and business. By opening up lines of communication, the project helped children see themselves as writers with a voice, while giving businesses an opportunity to engage meaningfully with their local community.
At Culture Mile BID, we are proud to support initiatives that build bridges between the Square Mile’s world-class organisations and the next generation. Projects like this enrich the cultural and social fabric of the area, ensuring that Culture Mile remains a place of opportunity, creativity and connection for all. We look forward to continuing to support partnerships that inspire young people and celebrate the unique character of Culture Mile.
