Mary Beard and Charlotte Higgins are bringing their hit podcast Instant Classics to London’s Guildhall for a one-off live show exploring the city’s ancient Roman roots.
Vespucci in collaboration with the City of London Corporation and the Culture Mile Business Improvement District presents the first live recording of Instant Classics, where hosts Mary Beard and Charlotte Higgins uncover what life was like in Roman London. What did a typical evening out look like for Roman Londoners? Cheering gladiators? Gossiping in the baths? Worshipping mysterious gods? We’ll explore it all within the remains of London’s Roman Amphitheatre at Guildhall Art Gallery in the Culture Mile, dating back to the first century CE.
Set within the Guildhall Art Gallery, right above the remains of a Roman amphitheatre, the event promises an evening steeped in history, humour, and insight from two of Britain’s leading classicists.
The live discussion will take audiences back nearly two thousand years, asking what life in Roman Londinium was really like; from cheering on gladiators to gossiping in the baths or worshipping mysterious gods.
